ABSTRACT

PARIS, AS I THOUGHT SHE WOULD BE I arrived at the Gare du Nord, on 1 May 1968 with the distinct impression that I had been here before. Everything fell into place, as if it was a home coming. The Roman family had ties with France for several generations, with great uncles and uncles studying here, with reminiscences of pre-war visits, with a French aunt by marriage and with many, many contacts and friends, in all walks of life and of all ages.
