In the 1889 edition of Chambers' book it was accepted that the extra satellites reported by Herschel do not exist. Umbriel was definitely seen by LasselJ in 1851, and there has been claim that one of the inner satellites (either Ariel or Umbriel) may have been glimpsed by the Russian astronomer Struve from the Dorpat Observatory, in Estonia, in 1847, but again the evidence ts very vague.
