ABSTRACT

Numerous manifestations of electron correlations have been observed in high quality GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures at low temperatures and high magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the interface containing the 2D electron gas [1]. For filling factors less than two the composite fermion model can be used to describe a series of quantum Hall states occurring at odd-denominator fractional filling as bosonic condensates, with the even denominator filling factors demonstrating properties of filled Fermi seas [2]. As filling factor increases interesting phenomena in transport abound, but the understanding of the ground states diminishes: at 5/2 filling a quantum Hall state occurs [3] in spite of its apparent violation of the odd-denominator rule justifying the condensation, and in the higher Landau levels the transport becomes highly non-isotropic [4]. This anisotropy is the focus of this study.
