ABSTRACT

Thomas Telford was a Scotsman who started his career as a stonemason and eventually went on to found the Institution of Civil Engineers. In the course of his illustrious career Telford perfected a method of broken stone construction (Fig. 9.2(b)) which built upon but refined Tresaguet's, e.g. he used level foundations but raised the pavement above ground level to reduce drainage problems, shaped the foundation stones so that they fitted more closely together, and made the pavement as dense as possible to minimize moisture penetration.
