ABSTRACT

W hat does it take to design a successful product? How would you define a successful product? These are important questions.

Many people would answer the second question in primarily financial terms-a successful product is one that generates profit and maximizes a company’s return on its investment. However, while this would be a popular answer, it is not a very useful one. Very few companies design products intentionally to make a loss on in the long run. Even if the product is intended as a loss leader, the aim is to recoup the loss sus tained in future generations of the product family.
