ABSTRACT

The notation quantum satis means that there is no maximum level. However, it is expected that the colorant is used "according to good manufacturing practices and only at those levels in order to achieve the objective." [Article 2 (7)]

j) Colorants for declaration, stamping and egg colorants

For the purposes of food coloration and as a colorant for stamping and egg coloring, the so-called C-colors are currently approved, e.g., methyl violet (C 2) as a meat stamp. Colorants like these will not be approved in the future. The new instruction is:

"For the declaration of food-grade ... and for other declaration purposes, which are prescribed for meat products, the following colorants are approved: E 155 Brown HT; E 133 Brilliant blue FCF and Alizarin Red AC." [Article 2 (8)]

"For the color decoration of egg shells or for stamping purposes on egg shells, only those colorants can be used that are listed in annex I (see Table 6)." [Article 2 (9)]

k) Solvents/carriers

There is no new instruction in the ED guidelines regarding the utilization of solvents and carriers for food colorants. The current instructions remain valid (see Table 11).
