ABSTRACT

The poor conditions of bodies of water have forced most countries of America and Europe, including Russia, to introduce very strict standards for effluent. The Russian discharge requirements are in general very restrictive, especially with respect to content of organic and suspended mattcr as wcll as phosphorus and nitrogen compounds. The maximum amounts allowed are as follows: BOD = 3 mg/L, PO~- = 0.2 mg/L, NH~ = 0.39 mg/L, NO~ = 9.1 mg/L, NO;- = 0.02 mg/L. The requircments listed apply to the water in a certain estimated cross section of a body of water. In real life, howcver, very often the level of contamination in a body of water is higher than it should be, which is why the requirements are shifted directly to the effluent.
