ABSTRACT

Various industrial operations result in the annual withdrawal of substantial areas of forests and agricultural crops, thereby disturbing the ecological equilibrium over huge areas. Reclamation of the affected lands is expensive in terms of cash, time, and effort. What is more, there is the need to take account of the contamination specifics, climatic and other conditions, and peculiarities of the region under consideration. Site remediation is a frustratingly slow process. Thus areas reclaimed during the past decade account for no more than lO% of areas in Russia in need of remediation.
