ABSTRACT

Figure 3-12 Adsorption of DPPC compared to whole or solvent-extracted lung surfactant. DPPC adsorbs much more slowly than endogenous lung surfactant or its chloroform:methanol extract containing surfactant lipids and hydrophobic apoproteins. Fluid phospholipids adsorb better than DPPC but still not nearly as well as lung surfactant (not shown). Lung surfactant adsorption is greatly facilitated by interactions between phospholipids and surfactant proteins (Chapter 8). Curves are representative from literature data for DPPC and whole and extracted surfactant obtained by lavage from calf lungs.
