ABSTRACT

C.R. Todhunter Castings Technology International Ltd (formerly Steel Castings Research and Trade Association) UK This paper will put into perspective the use of cast metals and introduce new techniques and resources which tilt the balance of cost and performance away from wrought and fabricated steels towards cast iron and steels, especially in structural applications. During the eighties, British foundries took the lead in producing cast steel connections for North Sea oil platforms. They had to prove that their method was more reliable and less expensive than conventional welded connections. In the nineties, a few architects and engineers have been applying similar principles to buildings, both in main and secondary structures. For some the use of castings has passed beyond the stage of 'innovative and risky' to 'commonplace and safe'. But for most, ignorance and prejudice need to be cleared away before the problems and obstacles of using these materials can even be discussed. The construction industry has a massive momentum and any potential change of material usage faces a vicious circle: Designers don't know about it so there is no demand. Without demand, there is no market and no marketing. Because there is no information, designers cannot find out about it. Working from the standpoint of a designer, it has been possible to go out and actively find out about the industry and take the information to prominent practices by running seminars and making a fifty minute training video generally available.
