ABSTRACT

Abstract The interaction of elastic 5 if-waves with imperfectly bonded thin interfaces between two elastic media is examined. Small strains and displacements prevail. The interface conditions are defined as linear relations between interface displacement discontinu ities and related traction. Progressive damage of the interface is taken into account by an evolution law in continuum damage mechanics whereby successive incident wave/pulse interaction events promote the development of damage at the interface. The system of coupled equations consisting of one coupled partial differential equa tion for the propagating wave and one nonlinear equation for the damage can be solved iteratively for any given initial damage. Lifetimes, measured in numbers of wave pulses to failure, have been calculated for various dissimilar material parameter combinations.
