ABSTRACT

In contrast to finite element simulations discrete particle models are based on a mechanical model of individual idealized particles and not on a continuum model. They are mainly used to study phenomena associated with flowing material. Works published in the field of hard sphere analyses and collision dynamics include works by Walton and Braun (1986a, b), Campbell and Zhang (1992), Campbell (1993) and Herrmann (1993). Tsuji et al. (1987; 1992) and Cundall and Strack (1979) have written on Hooke’s law interactions, while Tiiziin and Heyes (1996), Heyes and Melrose (1993), Thornton and Randall (1988) and Thornton and Yin (1991) have studied continuous force interactions and micro-contact interactions respectively.
