ABSTRACT

Pressures applied on the walls are obviously the first parameters to be determined since they lead directly to the design of silos. Although signifi cant progress has been made in the theoretical design of pressure cells, it is still difficult to find cells suitable for silo tests. The existing cells are selfmade devices developed by one laboratory for very specific silo tests and not usually available to others. Calibration of such pressure cells presents a further difficulty since it must be done in contact with the stored materials themselves, in special chambers or possibly in geotechnical centrifuges if only normal stress is considered.
