ABSTRACT
The nuclear industry has a good track record of reliable containment. This has been achieved through a number of key features such as:
• a well developed safety case • stabilisation of waste products • packing into handleable forms • packing within durable containers • storage in an engineered and controlled environment • high confidence in preventing waste from leaching to the biosphere by quality
design against low probability events • structural solutions for low probability design events such as thermal, impact
and seismic effects • a management system which includes systematic monitoring
