ABSTRACT

Abstract In 1981 trials were first carried out using Mesh Track as reinforcement in asphalt overlays. Following these succesful trials Mesh Track steel reinforcement has been used regulary to prevent cracking and rutting in many problem areas. After 15 years of widespread practical experience the opportunity exists to make a full evaluation of the effectiveness and the durability of steel reinforced asphalt. This paper evaluates the product itself within a number of application areas, e.g. overlays on peat, on concrete slabs, underdesigned roads etc., and also focusses on recommendations for laying the product taking into account the latest developments and trends within road construction (e.g. slurry sealing, porous asphalt mixes, recycling potential of asphalt). Keywords: cracking, rutting, application areas, laboratory testing, project evaluation, practical advice, recycling, steel reinforcement, sluriy sealing.
