ABSTRACT

Abstract For a system of polymer concrete containing alumina as filler and methyl methacrylate (MMA) as binder, several coupling agents were investigated for their effect on improving the affinity and dispersion capability, as well as the influence exerted by their different use conditions. The investigation was performed by both, dynamicmechanical approach and statistical analysis of SEM images. The results demonstrated that surface modification of alumina with silane having methacrylic functional groups provided uniform distribution and strong interaction for the MMA polymer binder. Thus the surface modification of filler results in significantly improved properties such as workability, strength and volume stability of polymer concrete.
