ABSTRACT

Abstract Steel pile foundations are successfully used for a wide variety of civil engineering structures in the UK, but load resistance prediction methods are currently inadequate. Offshore axial load capacity prediction methods have been developed during 50 years of experience with driven steel tubular piles and have proved to be equally appropriate to onshore soils by fullscale pile load tests carried out in the UK that were reported in 1992. The possibility of extending these prediction methods to encompass steel H-piles and sheet piles is being studied by the Steel Construction Institute using pile load test results and soils data from several UK highway bridge construction projects for validation. Keywords: Steel piles, pile foundations, sheet piles, highway bridges.
