ABSTRACT

Abstract Modal testing of full-scale concrete floors is introduced here as a tool for obtaining more reliable analytical models for checking their vibration serviceability. However, in order to verify the use of modal testing in civil engineering applications, the paper first describes the general aims and objectives of modal testing in mechanical and aeronautical engineering where it is a conunonly used technique. There is a major concern that manually applied instrumented hanuner impact excitation of heavy concrete floors may not be a suitable method capable of producing good quality modal testing results. The paper discusses this issue. Finally, some practical guidelines for the selection of portable field modal testing equipment are given together with some remarks on the limitations of the equipment and some typical pitfalls when using it. Keywords: Hanuner impact, modal testing.
