ABSTRACT

The selection of proper joint sealing has always been a difficult decision for the facade designer, although the process is sometimes dictated by the choice of cladding system. Many stick-system curtain walls, such as that shown in Figure 1 (a), rely on synthetic rubber gaskets to provide a seal around glazing units and infill panels, whereas pre-cast concrete panel cladding systems, such as that shown in Figure l(b), rely on site-applied wet sealants to weather-seal the gap between panels. However, the stick-system curtain wall may use structural sealants to secure the glazing, and the pre-cast concrete cladding panel uses gaskets as part of the glazing system.
