ABSTRACT

Abstract The present article deals with a continuous method for measuring the chemical shrinkage of cement pastes. This experimental approach reveals possible measurement artefacts which will be presented and discussed, such as size effects. Two types of measurement are tested: (1) dilatometry method, (2) weighing method. Results for each method are compared and conclusions on the choice of measurement are drawn. Our results finally highlight the influence of the large and rapid changes in permeability which are especially characteristic of the hydration of low water to cement ratio cement pastes. Keywords: chemical shrinkage, cement paste, cement hydration.
