ABSTRACT
Bitumen is a natural derivative of crude oil and has been used as a waterproofing and bonding agent since about 4,000 BC. Currently, world bitumen production is in the order of 20 to 25 million tonnes per annum, most of which is used in road construction and approximately 30% in Europe.
