ABSTRACT

This change in attitude, towards an emphasis on integrated and interacting Earth systems, has been accompanied by technical and computing developments which permit the storage, retrieval, manipulation and display of spatial information at different scales, both temporal and geographical. Remotely-sensed images are now seen as a particular type of spatial data, with their own spatial and temporal scales, and the incorporation of remotely-sensed data within an integrated spatial data handling system is seen to be the most effective way to extract and use the information they contain.
