ABSTRACT

Accidents have occurred on rides where the poor design of passenger containment systems may be considered to be a major contributor. To investigate the problem the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) is currently undertaking a study with the main aim of producing design guidance for passenger containment on amusement devices based on sound ergonomics principles. A literature survey showed that the majority of work carried out on restraint systems has been for the automobile and aviation industries. None of the papers found related directly to the amusement industry. The automobile and aviation work proved to be of little use in this context mainly because the forces involved, the duration of containment and the economics are very different.
