ABSTRACT

James Prescott Joule James Prescott Joule (1818-89) was born in Manchester into a family of brewers. He was tutored by John Dalton at the Manchester Academy which had been established in 1792 by members of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society (founded in 1781). Apart from the unit of energy which carries his name, he is best known for his experimental researches on the equivalence of mechanical work and heat.
