Fatty acid s ma y b e oxidize d i n the endoplasmi c reticulu m at the termina l methyl
groups t o dicarboxyli c acids. Thi s is done using cytochrome P-45 0 systems ( C h a p -
ter 17) , where th e initia l product is co-hydroxy fatty acid . Thes e dicarboxyli c acids
may underg o f3 oxidatio n a t eithe r en d t o yiel d shorte r dicarboxyli c acids , co Oxidation occur s t o a minor extent i n humans .
