ABSTRACT

The vast majority of chromatographs purchased today are provided with data acquisition and processing equipment. This will usually include a dedicated computer which will also control the operation of the chromatograph. In large laboratories the data acquisition and processing requirements for a number of different chromatographs are sometimes handled by a central computer. Central computers can time share with five, ten or even twenty different chromatographs and while data processing they can also provide laboratory housekeeping functions, such as monitoring the progress of samples through the laboratory from admission to the final report. The analyst or chromatographer does not need to know the details of the necessary electronic circuitry, nor the format of the software that is used in data processing. Notwithstanding, some perception of the logic behind the acquisition process and the mathematical algorithms that are used will help to identify the accuracy limits and the precision that can be expected from analysis.
