ABSTRACT
The presence of mayflies is usually an indicator of the absence of pollution because their larvae will not tolerate polluted bodies of water. In a few cases, however, they have successfully inhabited polluted areas. Knowledge of the species present at a particular body of water may sometimes be used as an indicator of the degree of its pollution. Unfortunately, many species of mayflies are becoming nearly extinct as a result of the extensive contamination of our waterways.
