Thioredoxins are small proteins with a catalytically active disulfide group that function in a spectrum of biochemical processes. They have been identified in a number of organisms and are thought to be ubiqui tous (1,2). The best characterized is Escherichia coli thioredoxin, whose chemical properties and three-dimensional configuration have been studied in great detail (3,4). The general properties follow.
