ABSTRACT
Successful vegetable production depends upon a supply of high-quality seeds. At the present time, the seed industry plays an important role in both the production and the distribution of vegetable seeds. One important reason that the demand for vegetables has increased in many parts of the world is the development of improved and more diverse methods ofvegetable preservation, such as canning, freezing, and dehydration. Such technology has led to a larger range of vegetable types and demands by processors for increased quantities. There have also been rapid advances in the technology of vegetable production on a large scale in Europe and the United States, where the rapid adoption of herbicides suitable for individual crops has led to crop establishment in a relatively weed-free environment and the subsequent use of precision drilling. This increasing interest in vegetables, no matter the scale of production, has led to local, national, and international activity to improve the supply and quality of vegetable seed.
