ABSTRACT

In the exploratory phase, several iterations may be necessary to integrate the experimental procedure, measurements, model, and identification procedure into a coherent system (Fig. 13.1). For these purposes, off-line estimation procedures are usually implemented. Recursive or on-line identification can be advantageously applied to biological systems for several reasons: the availability of more accurate, direct measurements; new theoretical results for the analysis techniques; the possibility to track changes in the system while data are collected; the emergence of powerful low-cost microcomputers for dedicated purposes; and the need for automation in monitoring and patient management to reduce costs.
