The cell wall, an extracellular structure made by the cell, is b iphasic; it consists of a skeleton of mierofibrils held together, and apart, by a like matrix. In the higher plants the mierofibrils are made of cellulosic 1 ,4 -3 -D-glucan chains. The composition and structure of the plant cell wall are discussed in Chap. 2 of this volume.
