ABSTRACT

Nitration is one of the classical unit processes of synthetic organic chemical manufacture. In all cases, a nitro group (- N02) is introduced into an organic compound, usually to be attached directly to a carbon atom. In some cases, however, it is attached through an oxygen atom (in nitrate esters, such as nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose) or through a nitrogen atom (as in nitroguanidine, cyclonite, and tetryl).
