19.1 Principal Aims of Standardization

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Geneva defines the principal aims of standardization as being the promotion of [1]:

Overall economy in terms of human effort, materials, power, etc., in the production and exchange of goods.

The protection of consumer interest through adequate and consistent quality of goods and services.

Provision of a means of expression and communication among all interested parties. Although, these aims may sound like propaganda statements, nevertheless, they carry a profound social, technical, and economic meaning. Two of these aims of standardization that are mentioned above are considered in more detail in the following sections.
