ABSTRACT

I. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the EPA entered into a Memorandum of Understanding in June 1987, that provides for the Bureau to supply technical assistance to the EPA in the area of treatment of inorganic wastes on Superfund sites. Bureau researchers had already developed an award-winning process to reclaim lead from scrap batteries electrolytically [1-3]. On the basis of this experience, interagency agreements were signed to conduct the treatability studies of waste at five battery-recycling Superfund sites.
