ABSTRACT

We now proceed to introduce certain variables which are always used to evaluate the tensile properties (14,27).

This variable is obtained by dividing the load sustained by a specimen by its initial cross-sectional area:

Nominal stress, O"nom = P/Ao (1) where P = load carried by the specimen at any moment during the specimen deformation (grams force or pound force), A0 = original cross-sectional area of the specimen (sq. em. or sq. in.), and O"nom = nominal stress (metric gflcm2 or English lbf/ in 2 ).
