ABSTRACT
Soil carbon plays a central role in both the cycling of nutrients and in soil structure (Swift and Woomer, 1993; Syers and Craswell, 1995). Plant biomass produced in agricultural or natural systems may be either removed from the system in products or residues, or remain on the soil surface. The fate of this biomass has a profound effect on C cycling.
