ABSTRACT

M ATHEMATICAL operations are one of the main tools in the wastewater operator's bag of knowledge skills. Wastewater treatment and unit operations involve a large number of process control calculations. Most of these calculations are based upon the basic math principles that were covered in Volume l of the handbook series. In this chapter, we cover intermediate mathematical operations-practical operations that wastewater operators are required to use, many of them on a daily basis, in actual plant operating situations. Along with an explanation of each math operation, several sample problems are included. A practice test is included at the end of this chapter to determine your level of math skill. This is important because, without mastering math skills, the user of this text will find subsequent chapters (which include a lot of math) difficult to complete. More importantly, without a sound foundation in mathematical practical operation skills, the wastewater operator is at a serious disadvantage in his or her attempt to achieve licensure as a certified wastewater professional.
