ABSTRACT

HA R M F U L algal blooms including toxic algae have a severe economic impact on aquaculture as well as environmental and human health implications. In recent years there has been a global increase in the number of toxic events: for example, paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) is an accumulation of toxins in shellfish and can be fatal to humans upon ingestion. The distribution of PSP appears to be expanding all over the world (Hallegraeff, 1993).
