ABSTRACT

W ASTEWATER operators have a twofold function in wastewater treatment plant operations: (1) keep the plant running and (2) make permit. To accomplish this, the operator does more than simply turn valves, push switches, lubricate equipment, read gauges and record data. The wastewater operator also collects samples and typically performs analysis on these samples. Sampling and performing sample analysis are important, not only because they are required to satisfy various local, state, and federal compliance stipulations, but because they help to gauge the performance of the treatment process. Results from such samples indicate how the plant is performing. From these sampling results, the operator determines what adjustments (if any) should be made to optimize the treatment process.
