ABSTRACT

ST. John's wort, Hypericum perforatum L., is a shrubby, aromatic perennial herb belonging to the family of Hypericaceae. It is native to Europe, western Asia, North Africa, Madeira and the Azores and is naturalized in many parts of the world, particularly North America and Australia (Hobbs, 1989). The medicinal parts of the plant include the fresh buds and flowers, the aerial parts collected during the flowering season and the whole fresh flowering plant (Anonymous, 1998a).
