ABSTRACT

Lowbush blueberry growers in Maine are adopting many cultivation practices to enhance yields, prevent weather related losses and improve quality of their harvest. Since 1990 irrigated land in lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) production in Maine has increased 400% (Yarborough, 2002). At the same time that irrigated area is increasing, additional water supplies have not been easy to obtain. Competing water needs and environmental impacts have made acquiring suitable water supply for irrigation much more difficult. A better understanding of the difference irrigation can make in yields is desired by growers utilizing irrigation and those considering irrigation for their operations.
