ABSTRACT

Khol rabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes L. or Brassica caulorapa L.) is a member of cole group of vegetables belonging to the family Cruciferae with chromosome number (2n) = 18. ‘Khol’ has been derived from German word ‘Kohl’ meaning cabbage turnip which resembles an above ground tur­ nip. The fleshy enlargement of the stem called knob, a rounded lump, devel­ ops entirely above the ground and is used as a vegetable before it becomes tough and fibrous, though in early strains the young leaves may also be cooked.
