ABSTRACT

This report presents a new piezoelectric sensor/actuator design for new smart robots and machine structures/components. The integrated piezoelectric sen sor/actuator provides self-monitoring and control capabilities for smart mechani cal systems. This is the second part of the report, concentrating on numerical aspects-finite element formulation, analysis, and applications. In this report, a new piezoelectric finite element is derived for modeling piezoelectric sen sor/actuator systems. Distributed structural identification and vibration control of distributed parameter systems (DPSs) are also derived and formulated. Appli cations of the theory to distributed modal identification and control, flexible robots, high-precision machine operations, etc. are demonstrated in case studies.
