The fetus develops nails near the tips of the digits (fingers and toes) (Fig. 12-9). This development begins early in the fetal period (at 10 weeks). Despite their seeming similarity, the fingernails and toenails develop at different paces, with the fingernails reaching the tips of the digits at 32 weeks and the toenails at 36 weeks.
