ABSTRACT
Constructed drainage systems are usually subject to conditions which in time affects their functioning. Measures (called maintenance) therefore need to be taken to safeguard the level of performance for which they were designed. The discussion here will focus on the maintenance of open drains and subsurface pipe systems. The poor maintenance of drainage systems in the developing countries is of special concern, warranting separate analysis and discussion (section 22.5).
