ABSTRACT

Sequences are functions defined over the integers. The ordering property of the integers is what makes sequences special. A sequence defined explicitly can be represented in Maple by any function taking integers as arguments. Exploring the behaviour of a sequence graphically is standard practice in experimental mathematics. Plotting a sequence amounts to plotting points on the plane. The number of elements in the repeating block is called the period of the sequence. Periodic sequences are of great interest. Some important sequences originate from the process of counting elements of certain sets, such as the number of permutations of a set of n objects, or the number of combinations of n objects, taken k at a time. The value of seq is a list of expressions separated by commas, called an expression sequence, or, more briefly, a sequence.
