ABSTRACT

Water cleavage induced by uv-irradiation of aqueous suspensions of M/Ti02 polycrystalline samples (M=Pt,Rh) has been studied. Only H~ evolu tion was observed while oxygen could not be detected during the experiments The presence of 02 really suppress H? photo-generation while oxygen photo uptake is observea. A mechanism is proposed for the photoinduced water splitting that involves generation of hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide, this latter being retained on the TiO? and probably corroding the TiO? particles without appreciable loss of photo-activity.
