ABSTRACT
In the mid-to late-1970s the use of oil-based mud (OBM) began to increase. By 1984 70-75% of all wells drilled on the UKCS used OBM in at least one section. It is probable that this percentage will remain constant, but overall drilling activity will be determined by the price of oil.
