ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Much attention has recently been focussed on attempts to develop test geometries to investigate the three modes of failure in as near a single failure mode as possible. The investigations have generally lead to geometries in which one or more notches have been introduced to fix the mode and plane of failure. These notches introduce stress concentrations that can generate failures of a form not originally intended.
