ABSTRACT

The analytical procedures used for S.S., COD, BOD and M.B.A.S. were those described in “Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 16th Edit, 1985”. The M.B.A.S. method was slightly modified in order to facilitate the settling of the emulsions formed when mixing chloroform and water. For that purpose, centrifuge tubes instead of settling funnels were used. Water samples were previously filtered (glass fiber filters Wathman GF/C) in order to remove S.S. A summary of the procedure is represented in Fig 1. L.A.S. determination was carried out on the filtered water as well as on the suspended solids separated by filtration. Extraction and concentration of L.A.S. have been done using a reverse phase resin (C-18). The

H.P.L.C. analysis was done in a SHIMADZU C-R3A chromatograph using a UV detector at 225 nm, and a column Li-Chromosorb RP-18, 5 nm. Fig. 2 shows a flow scheme of the processes used.
